Paper Grotto

Paper Grotto LIVE...

is a Video, Dance and Music performance inside a giant paper sculpture set. The performers appear and disappear inside the sculpture installation as it is built from the inside out. The video projection on sculpture and dance creates a mesmerizing look into a hyper-real "living painting".

About the TREE-CYCLED featured artists

Lily Hatchett

LILY HATCHETT, award-winning visual artist, uses mixed media like a palette. She is a full-time artist, performance artist and independent filmmaker. Her Paper Grotto Live sculpture performances become containers for video, dance and music, pushing the boundaries of Butoh and Origami.

Just watch "…sometimes the paper dogs just takeover!"

"Life and art are both all about learning and acquiring new skills. Drawing provides me the means for visualizing my ideas. I work in various art forms: painting, sculpture, photography, video and performance art. My art is a playground of unseen realities that have to be rendered visible to become more than a passing thought. My essence as an artist is to open up imaginations. The imagination is the sandbox of countless possibilities. From breathtaking vistas to hidden places, the unexpected becomes art".

David Hatchett

The Eva Hesse Retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in 1972 was a turning point for me as an artist. The material presence of her art transformed my observation of physical material into an internal, sensation based experience. It took me years to grasp the Hesse influence in my own work. Construction became central to my work, culminating in a solo show at the Charles Cowles Gallery in 1980, and the basis for all of my sculptures and paintings.

Found Object sculpture made an early imprint on me, stemming from my sculptor father, Duayne Hatchett. I make my sculpture with discovered materials from the construction industry. My childhood drawings or the black-and-white photos of my metal clad sculptures, are found materials that generate imagery for my paintings.

I was the costume designer for the Robert Wilson production of Parcival at the Thalia Theatre in Hamburg, Germany in 1987. Robert Wilson makes the sublime funny. This experience formed a major shift in my artistic evolution. My other theatrical work includes a male lead role in the Richard Rutkovsky film, Medea Media, as well as lyricist and singer in rock bands, spoken word performances, and dancer in the Lily Hatchett Paper Grotto performances.
